On A Budget

Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth

It happens to all of us: You get a craving for something sweet, dash to the Commons, and spend the dregs of your checking account on an overpriced cupcake. No more. Here’s how to satisfy your sweet tooth all week using ingredients you already have at home.

These treats are called Neiman Marcus bars, and they’re named after the high-end department store. But you don’t need to pay a high-end price yourself to enjoy them. There’s an interesting rumor behind this recipe: A couple was eating at a restaurant inside the store and after eating these delicious bars, requested the recipe. They got the recipe. . . and a $200 charge in addition to their bill for receiving it. To get back at the company for the unexpected charge, they posted the recipe online (it was meant to be a secret), and now anyone can make these delicious bars themselves.

First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Then, take out your ingredients.

Yup, that’s all of them.

Here’s the first part; the ingredients for the cake:

  • 1 15 oz. box of yellow cake mix
  • 1 stick of butter, melted
  • 1 egg

Blend these ingredients together, and put the mixture in a 9 x 13 inch pan.

Next, you’re going to take the following ingredients:

  • 8 oz. cream cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 4 cups of powdered sugar

Blend these together in a medium sized bowl and pour on top of your first mixture. Stick the pan in the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes or until the soon-to-be-bars are golden brown. Let them cool for 10-15 minutes when you take them out of the oven.

Now you have bars to share with roommates, and to treat yourself with for the next week. Dig in!
