4 Ways to Get The Most Out of Your Meal Plan

Don’t let your meal money go to waste

We all know that horrible feeling that comes with the realization that you still have 500 meal points left in your account at the end of spring semester. The UP Residence Life webpage states what most of us already know: “Dining Points for a given academic year must be used by the end of the spring semester. There are no refunds, transfers of Dining Points to other students, or carryover opportunities.” Essentially, ending spring semester with meal points still left in your account is the equivalent of throwing your money away.

Here are four ways to make the most out of your meal points and ensure that you don’t have any left over come the end of the semester:

  1. Spend your meal points at Mack’s Market

Mack’s Market is open from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm Wednesday through Sunday. Mack’s Market sells snacks, condiments, candy, baking supplies, drinks, cleaning supplies, kitchenware, personal care items, and general grocery items. Instead of leaving meal points on your account, why not use the to buy the items that you already need?

  1. Order food from Global every night

When I was on the UP meal plan I typically avoided Global when attempting to budget my meal points. Food from Global tends to be more expensive than some of the other food served at the commons. However, if you have points to spare, why not spend them at Global?

  1. Donate your points

Even if you already missed the chance to donate bulk food items purchased with meal points last Saturday at Kenna, there’s no reason why you can’t use your meal points to buy these items and donate them to those in need on your own. It’s a much better option than letting your meal points go to waste.

  1. Buy food for your friends

While meal points can’t be transferred to other students, there is nothing wrong with using your points to buy food for your friends who ran out of their meal points too early. Another option is to give your card to one of the cashiers at the commons and pay for a few strangers’ meals (everyone will love you).

Hopefully, if you keep these tips in mind, you will be able to get the most out of your meal points and use them all before the spring semester is over!
